This tourist Kenyan town turned out to be a small Italian “colony”.

Watamu is a special place, the locals here speak more Italian than English. I wouldn’t be surprised if some spoke more Italian than their own mother tongue. Yes, it’s that full of Italians here, tourists and expatriates. And that means, lots of ice cream!

The beach is simply beautiful, a small bay with big island rocks in the middle provide great spots for hiking and taking panoramic pictures.

I loved the fact that I could speak Italian here, but my German friend Alex wasn’t so pleased about it. In the afternoon we would swim in the bay, but in the morning the tide is out so we walk from one side of the bay to the other.

The shallow waters make a wonderful natural aquarium on which you can walk and see all kind of sea life.

We spent two days here but it’s such a nice place we could stay for a week. We move on as we have a long road ahead of us.
